02/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 2 July, the European Commission authorised French state aid to transport by inland waterways. The scheme will take effect during the period 2008-2012 with a total budget of €16.5 million. Aid aims to encourage the development of river transport in France by modernising the fleet and by promoting the profession of inland waterway carrier. Modernisation of the fleet should bring energy savings and a reduction of polluting emissions. (O.L./transl.jl)
