Brussels, 28/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - In unanimously adopting conclusions on promoting and protecting children's rights in the framework of EU external action, in Brussels on 27 May, EU development ministers set out their guidelines so that EU development and humanitarian aid policies serve that objective. The Council thus approved a Slovenian Presidency priority. “We want a comprehensive and integrated approach to the promotion and protection of the rights of the child, based on human rights and incorporating all the areas of EU external action, including the CFSP. The EU has to make greater effort in this,” said Anders Ster, the Council president. In its conclusions, the Council expresses its determination to continue to challenge any form of child labour. It recommends that the rights and needs of the child be taken into account in allocating aid, special attention be paid to the specific needs of boys and girls at particular risk of any form of violence and exploitation, and the rapid implementation of all EU programmes and plans for children affected by conflicts.
