THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/poland

28/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Union should have a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, according to Polish Foreign Minister Radislaw Sikorski, speaking to the European Policy Centre (EPC) in Brussels on 26 May. “This would reflect its growing importance in international relations,” he said. It was “odd” that the EU was permanently represented in the highest body of the UN by only two old “western” member states (France and the United Kingdom) “without a single central or eastern European country,” he commented. Sikorski also said that his country was an enthusiastic supporter of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), while being a firm ally of the United States and a leading player in strong transatlantic relations. “There is no contradiction between these two complementary policies,” he opined. Hitherto, Poland has taken part in every EU CFSP military and civilian mission and “we are prepared to do more,” he said. (H.B.)
