28/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 27 May, IMCO (Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection) at the European Parliament (EP) adopted the report of Anja Weisgerber (EPP-ED, Germany) on the approval of vehicles with hydrogen engines. This legislative proposal (co-decision, first reading) aims to set out harmonised rules for approving hydrogen powered vehicles. This proposal aims to prevent the emergence of different product standards that could fragment the internal market and create unnecessary barriers to intra-Community trade. It also seeks to ensure that hydrogen systems are as safe as traditional motor technologies. The vote on the proposal is expected next July, during the EP plenary session in Strasbourg. (B.C.)
