European scientists discover first evidence of gene for nicotine addiction

Brussels, 04/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - Scientists have discovered a human gene mutation which leads to nicotine addiction, according to a European Commission press release. These scientists have demonstrated that a specific mutation of a gene acting on a nicotine receptor had an effect on smoking behaviour, thus leading to a 30% increase in the risk of lung cancer and a 20% higher risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD).
