Avian flu H5N1 virus reaches Romania

Brussels, 28/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - Romania informed the European Commission on Wednesday 28 November of the discovery of a case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu virus on a poultry farm in the Danube delta (Tulcea province).

The Romanian authorities rapidly applied the measures envisaged in the Avian Influenza Directive: a cull of the birds on the farm and the implementation of a 3 km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone around the contaminated farm. This news comes several days after the reappearance of the H5N1 avian flu virus in the east of England, where 68 000 birds have been destroyed. (L.C.)
