THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/iran

07/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on 6 November, the EU expressed its concern about the situation of Emmaddedin Baghi recently sentenced in Iran for allegedly “acting against national security” and “publicity in favour of opponents of the regime”. Beghi, an Iranian human rights activist, renowned for his stand in favour of abolition of the death penalty and his argument that this abolition is in line with Sharia law, has again been imprisoned after an unjustified decision of the court to overturn the suspension of his 2003 conviction, says the Portuguese presidency. It repeats its appeal to the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect the right to freedom of expression. (A.B.)
