25/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - An error slipped into yesterday's newsletter regarding fishing quotas in the Baltic Sea for 2008 (see EUROPE 9530). Estonia is indeed opposing the compromise, but on the grounds that it wants a lower rather than higher total allowable catch (TAC) for herring in the Gulf of Riga. 'Following the ICES advice and precautionary principle with a view to stabilising catch levels for the long-term period, Estonia is proposing to decrease TAC for herring stock in the Gulf of Riga, setting TAC on the level of 34,000 tonnes. The herring stock in Gulf of Riga has decreased during the last 2-3 years, which in our view justifies more cautious approach concerning this stock.' (L.C.)
