07/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 6 September, the Commission's spokesperson said that, for now, the Commission has nothing more to say about the assessment of damage done by the forest fires in Greece other than what was indicated during the visit to the region at the end of August by European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner. An assessment of the situation is currently to be made by the Commission and the Greek authorities. Once these analyses are complete, Greece will have ten weeks in which to call for Commission funds to help it get back on its feet, the spokeswoman added. Once the request has been made, the Commission will look at the facts and forward the request to the Council, she concluded (see EUROPE 9492). (gb)
