Luxembourg, 18/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - In conclusions adopted on Monday, the foreign affairs ministers of the EU27 welcomed the “clear commitment” and “concrete and effective actions” taken by the new Serbian government to cooperate fully with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). If talks with a view to a stabilisation and association agreement between the EU and Serbia are resumed, the pace of these negotiations and their conclusion will depend most particularly on Belgrade's full cooperation with The Hague, stresses the Council, reiterating Serbia's European future. Without relating this to the previous issue, the Council went on to underline the need to “rapidly seek a solution” for the Kosovo issue. The report by the secretary-general of the United Nations, which takes up the proposals by Martti Ahtisaari, “provides a basis to resolve the issue of the status, thanks to a new United Nations Security Council resolution”, states the Council, which supports the efforts to ensure that the Security Council can adopt such a resolution “as quickly as possible”. It went on to add that this resolution also constitutes “a basis for a future EU and international presence” in the currently Serbian province. Ministers will return to the issue at their dinner on the sidelines of the European Council on Thursday evening. (ab)
