Luxembourg, 18/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - Despite the absence of substantial economic and social policy change in Cuba, the European Union on Monday declared that it was ready to, “resume a comprehensive and open political dialogue with the Cuban authorities on all topics of mutual interest”. Still demonstrating its solidarity with the Cuban opposition, the “External Relations” Council meeting in Luxembourg explained that conclusions for such a dialogue should “include the whole range of potential fields of cooperation”, namely, political and human rights questions, as well as economic, scientific and cultural subjects. Despite a fall in the number of political prisoners and acts of harassment, the situation had not fundamentally changed, foreign affairs ministers underlined in their conclusions. They also stated that the issue of freedom was, “of very high importance” in determining policy towards Cuba. (ab)
