Brussels, 20/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union (Frontex) will finally be able to carry out patrols to combat illegal immigration off the European coast. Seventeen states have in fact promised the agency that they will provide the necessary equipment for launching operations as of this spring. In total, 19 aircraft, 24 helicopters, 107 boats as well as technical material such as infrared lights, detectors and detection kits against forged papers, have been promised to the agency. “These are very satisfactory numbers, especially those coming from France and Italy. However, we still hope for more offers to be made in the near future”, said Frontex Director Ilkka Laitinen in a press release. (bc)
