European project for punishing racism and xenophobia finds echo among MEPs

Brussels, 20/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Racist acts have increased in frequency this year - between 20 and 45% depending on member states. It is to this worrying backdrop that Martine Roure, MEP from France (PES), opened a debate on Monday at the European Parliament in Brussels on how appropriate it is to have Community-wide legislation to harmonise provisions on the criminal nature of spreading racist and xenophobic comments.
