Peter Mandelson at G33 meeting in Jakarta

Brussels, 20/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson, went to Jakarta on Tuesday, where he will take part in a meeting on Wednesday of the G33 “friends of the special products” countries. These countries are led by Indonesia and at this meeting are expected to decide on their common position for the Doha negotiations (EUROPE 9389). Peter Mandelson will meet his G33 counterparts in Jakarta, including the Indonesian minister for trade, Mari Elka Pangestu, as well as G20 leaders, Indian trade minister Kamal Nath, the Head of Brazilian diplomacy, Celso Amorim and WTO Director General, Pascal Lamy. The Commissioner for trade explained in a press release before he left that discussions will focus on the, “contribution which developing countries can make to the Doah Round in agriculture and on agriculture trade, while recognising their sensitivities in both”. The G33 meeting will also examine progress by the G4 (European Union, US, Brazil and India) since the beginning of the year, “as the clock ticks to the expiry”, added Mr Mandelson, in a clear reference to the expiry date at the end of June of the US negotiators, the Trade Promotion Authority. The day before crucial meeting, Celso Amorim, increased the pressure on developed countries a little more. The Head of Brazilian diplomacy quoted by Reuters said, “Speaking now for developing counties, we are prepared to do our part, but of course the big countries, the majors, they have to have the main responsibility, especially by eliminating or diminishing the subsidies””.
