THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/france

20/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - A CSA survey published last week by Le Figaro on the French attitude toward European construction shows that, two years after the no-vote in the referendum on the Constitution, 71% of the French are “often or from time to time … proud of being Europeans”. Their verdict on the contribution that candidates to the presidential elections could make to European construction is 28% for Nicolas Sarkozy, 23% for Ségolène Royal and 22% for François Bayrou. Which French personality has contributed the most to European construction over the past 50 years? The result is surprising: General De Gaulle and François Mitterrand are in the lead, placed equally with 32%, followed by Jacques Delors (24%), Jacques Chirac (19%), and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (14%). Jean Monnet only has 11%, like Simone Veil. (lg)
