Frattini wants ban on rubber bullets against demonstrators

Brussels, 22/02/2007 (Agence Europe) -Commissioner for Security Franco Frattini declared on Wednesday that the Hungarian police are expected to stop using rubber bullets against demonstrators, despite the threat of more demonstrations next month that could see further violence breaking out. During a joint press conference with Jozsef Petretei, the Hungarian minister for justice, Frattini said that he hoped that “the government will take action and decisions…at the legislative level to prohibit rubber bullets in street events”. On 23 October in Budapest, the police used such projectiles during clashes with extremists marking the 50th anniversary of the anti-Soviet rising. These clashes led to more than 300 people being injured, including numerous bystanders. The Commissioner indicated that the Hungarian police should act in a professional manner, “to make it possible to avoid confusion between those who demonstrate peacefully and those who are ready to commit violent actions”. The Hungarian authorities are afraid that there will be further violence on 15 March, the date of national celebrations marking the Hungarian war of independence (1848) against the imperial house of the Habsburgs.
