Brussels, 14/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - José Luis Zapatero will be putting the idea to the European Council on 14 and 15 December that an international peace conference should be held on the Israel-Palestine conflict, it is reported in El Pais of 14 November. The conference is one of the initiatives suggested in the report on an Alliance of Civilisations drafted by a UN High Level Group under the aegis of the Spanish Prime Minister and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On Monday, the report was presented in Istanbul to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, who will be presenting a series of concrete measures in New York on 18 December when he leaves his post. In El Pais of 13 November, the two prime ministers stress that the harmonious cooperation and positive interdependency between religious beliefs and cultures generally leads to prosperity for all, while recognising that, in order to establish a vast coalition against the current move of distrust and suspicion between the West and the Islamic world, it will take a considerable international effort, extended in time. On Sunday, during a meeting in Istanbul with Mr Erdogan, Zapatero told the press that Turkey plays a very important international role and that Spain believes it should also play such a role within the European Union.
