Action plans for neighbourhood policy with Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan adopted

Brussels, 14/11/2006 (Agence Europe) - Cooperation Councils for EU/Georgia, EU/Armenia and EU/Azerbaijan, which took place the one after the other on 14 November in Brussels, approved the action plans for implementing European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) of the EU with the three countries of the Southern Caucasus. The political agreement on these action plans had already been obtained at the beginning of October during the visit of the EU ministerial Troika to the region. Addressing the press, the Finnish minister for foreign affairs and the current president of the acting Council of the EU, Erkki Tuomioja pointed out that the action plans did not only include closer relations in economic and policy matters but also meant a sharing of “common values”. He also expressed the EU's concern about tensions between Russia and Georgia and called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to find a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said that the action plans would allow for a “new chapter” to open up in relations with the three countries, as well as with the whole of this region. (hb)
