Public health concerns cause Commission to re-work authorisation proposals for six pesticides

Brussels, 13/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 13 September, the European Commission decided to amend the conditions that it had proposed for the authorisation of six pesticides - dinocap, carbendazim, fenarimol, flusilazole, metamidophos and procymidone. Believing that the proposals for a decision originally submitted to the Council could not meet the safety requirements for public health, the Commission approved an amended proposal for these substances, making them subject to very specific restrictions in use. The Commission will, as a precautionary measure, only propose to authorise dinocap and carbendazim under very strict safety conditions, with a precautionary 3-year authorisation, rather than the 7-year authorisation period initially proposed. For the four other substances, the Commission will modify its proposal and grant an authorisation under very strict safety conditions, with a shorter precautionary 18-month authorisation period, instead of the originally proposed 7-year period. These amended proposals are part of the review of all active substances used in plant protection products on the EU market. This review was provided for in directive 91/414/EC. The decision on whether or not to authorise these pesticides must be taken before the end of 2006, the deadline set for the first phase of the review.
