Brussels, 13/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the committee on international trade of the European Parliament adopted, by a vast majority, the report by Spanish member Daniel Varela (EPP-ED) on negotiations for a bilateral EU-Mercosur free-trade agreement, calling for a "timetable (...) allowing the negotiations to be concluded as soon as possible". The Doha negotiations and talks for an EU-Mercosur free-trade agreement, whilst closely linked, are not "mutually exclusive" and the conclusions of the regional agreement between Europeans and the South Americans could relaunch the round of multilateral Doha negotiations, which have been suspended since late July, according to the Varela report (see EUROPE 9263 for potential improvements to the offers of Brazil and the Mercosur countries to the European Union).
