Solana is ready to meet Larijani on Saturday - Washington, wanting immediate sanctions, in minority among Six

Brussels, 07/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - Visiting Copenhagen on Thursday, Javier Solana told the press he was “ready to meet” the chief Iranian negotiator on the nuclear issue, Ari Larijani, within two days (though he did not say where) to clarify Tehran's response to the offer of cooperation put forward by the Six (EU3 - Germany, France and United Kingdom - China, United States and Russia). Visiting Madrid, Mr Larijani said he would be meeting Mr Solana in “a few days”. In the meantime, in Berlin, where the policy directors of the Six' foreign ministers met on Thursday afternoon to study possible immediate sanctions against Tehran, given Iran's refusal to comply with the demands of the international community, the United States seemed increasingly isolated in its attempt to have this solution adopted. More than reserved about this option, Beijing and Moscow may, according to AFP, restate their will, on Thursday, to reach a negotiated solution. Speaking of the Twenty-Five's weariness due to the fact that the dossier seems to be increasingly bogged down, several diplomats noted reserve on the part of some capitals about how appropriate it is to impose sanctions, and on how effective such sanctions would be. The French foreign minister, Philippe Douste-Blazy, hinted on Thursday that the suspension of uranium enrichment activity by Tehran need not be an imperative precondition to talks.
