THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/middle east

07/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - The appeal launched on 8 August by Francis Wurtz, President of the EP's GUE/NGL group, for a solution to the Middle East crisis has obtained around 800 signatures and Mr Wurtz is proposing 'to launch it again so that anyone sharing its substance is able to contribute to opening up the necessary debate about a genuine EuroMediterranean partnership.' Mr Wurtz expects Europe to call 'for the strict and durable respect of the 'cessation of hostilities' in Lebanon', for a 'clear condemnation… of the war waged by Israel against the Lebanese people as well as against the Palestinian people', for 'a call to open discussions on the exchange of prisoners between Lebanon and Israel… and a lasting halt to the firing of Hezbollah's rockets into Israel', 'precise details on the nature of the mandate to be conferred on the multinational force envisaged in southern Lebanon, which under circumstances should be transformed, in its turn, into an aggressive force', 'the opening of negotiations… under the aegis of the United Nations, with the participation of all the countries and authorities in the region; and 'a solemn renunciation of any recourse to way as a means of regulating future conflicts.'
