GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/health/consumers

07/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - British Green Party MEP Caroline Lucas has sent a letter to Commissioner Markos Kyprianou expressing concern at the impact on UK consumers' health of the new maximum dosage levels for vitamins and other natural remedies in EU legislation. 'A large number of people in the UK rely on food supplements and vitamins to treat and prevent ill-health - and their right to do so is under threat form an EU directive designed, without irony, to protect them from toxic side effects of high levels of vitamins and minerals. For the sake of the good health of my constituents - including an ME sufferer who relies on vitamins and minerals to keep himself healthy and a woman who depends on food supplements to manage her son's Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - I urge the Commission to set up high permitted dosage levels, and to concentrate on tackling toxic pollution, pesticide use and road safety instead, if it really hopes to make a difference to citizens' health.'
