Debate on patient mobility and health services

Brussels, 04/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - As expected, the European Commission will start the new session on Tuesday 5 September with a debate on patient mobility and health services in the EU. The discussion will be introduced by Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, basing his remarks on a paper which raises a certain number of ideas likely to be taken up in a communication ahead of a public consultation exercise which could begin in a few weeks time. Initial discussions among representatives of the cabinets demonstrated that there was wide consensus on the need for such an initiative, because of patient mobility, rulings by the Court of Justice on health services and the exclusion of these services from the “Services” directive. While patient mobility has been achieved - and is being quite widely used - the mobility of services continues to raise questions. Thus agreement will be necessary on the scope and the form of this future initiative: that is what is at stake in this debate among European Commissioners.
