Marco Pannella worried for Opposition in Phnom Penh

Brussels, 04/09/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 1st September from Phnom Penh, MEP Marco Pannella raised a warning about “very, very serious laws” recently passed by the Cambodian parliament in the new session. These laws give cause for concern for the freedom of Sam Rainsy and “the other twenty three liberal representatives of the Opposition, our comrades in the Transnational Radical Party,” Mr Pannella told Radio Radicale. He said that under these laws, parliamentary immunity would no longer protect anyone accused of defamation. He also said that the regime was worried by the “desertion of the very powerful chief of police, who has fled to Singapore and who has begun making sensational statements about activities he carried out on the orders of the regime of Prime Minister Hun-Sen”. The Radical leader said that the European Union should take action, possibly even granting a refugee visa to the chief of police, who has become so dangerous for the regime that his own life is in danger.
