Brussels, 31/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The T.M.C Asser Institute is organising a seminar on 29 September in The Hague on Reconciling “deepening” and “widening” of the European Union. Professor Frans Nelissen, director of the Institute, and the Dutch minister for European affairs Atzo Nicolai will introduce the work. They will be discussing the European constitutional crisis. During the session on the deepening of European integration, progress in the domains of immigration and security will be discussed, as well as the problem of the free movement of workers in the new Member States. Comments will be provided by Professor Tibor Varady from Central European University and Kresimir Sajko a lecturer at the University of Zagreb. The session on enlargement will focus on the EU's “final frontier and beyond”, with comments by professor Bernadette Bordas from the University of Novi Sad and professor Uladzimir Astapenka, from Minsk University in Belarus. A final session will explore “New Ways Forward”, touching on the problem of the EU's capacity of absorption, ratification of the European Constitution and “privileged partnerships”, as an alternative to accession, with comments by Professor Vladimir Balas from the Czech Academy of Science. Professor Christophe Hillion from the University of Leiden will be asking whether “widening can serve as a vehicle for deepening” and Dr Adam Laowzki from the University of Westminster will be speaking on “the EEA, Switzerland, micro-states (other arrangements instead of partnership”, followed by comments by Prof Alexandru Farcas, former Romanian secretary of state for European integration, and with conclusions by Professor Sacha Prechal, president of the Commissie Europees Recht.
