Firm commitment from G-6 industry and business to resume negotiations

Brussels, 31/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The breakdown of the meeting of the G-6 (European Union, United States, Brazil, India, Australia and Japan) last Sunday and the resulting suspension of Doha Round negotiations are of great concern to the industries of these countries, who see an agreement concluding the Round and leading to increased liberalisation of trade in manufactured goods and services as a great opportunity for them. Therefore, the Business Roundtable, the US Chamber of Commerce and the NAM for the United States, the Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederations of Europe (UNICE) and the European Services Forum for the European Union, the National Confederation of Industry and the Federation of Industries of the State of Sao Paulo for Brazil, the Business Council and the Australian Services Roundtable for Australia, and the Nippon Keidanren for Japan issued a press release last week in which they called on the members of the WTO to resume negotiations "as soon as possible". "Talks could lead to a failure of the Doha Round, which would end the promise of economic growth (...) and the tremendous benefits that accrue from trade liberalisation", warns the press release, which lays emphasis on the "commitment" of the signatories in favour of a "well-balanced and ambitious" agreement, and the reinforcement of the multilateral system.
