24/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), an association of over 85 European, Turkish, Arab and Israeli organisations and individual members from the region, has launched an appeal for an end to the escalating violence against civil populations in the Middle East. In a press release, the association calls for "the killing of civilians to stop immediately", a ceasefire to be agreed throughout the region, an end to the "bombing or deliberately endangering (...) of installations which provide essential services to the civilian populations", and to the practice of taking military targets when it can be anticipated that such attacks will also cause excessive civilian damage. The EMHRN calls on all parties to respect Lebanon's sovereignty, and for the High Contracting Parties to the Geneva Conventions to meet as a matter of urgency to look into violations of these Conventions and how they can be rectified ".
