THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/mexico

10/07/2006 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative for CFSP/Secretary General of the EU Council and the President of the European Commission congratulate Felipe Calderon for his victory in the presidential elections in Mexico. In a press release, Javier Solana welcomes Calderon's call for national unity in order to accomplish major reforms left pending and the announcement that he is willing to seek compromises and alliances. Solana stressed that there are challenges facing Mexico and opportunities for it in the regional and international fields and, he is convinced, Mexican citizens will be able to benefit from these. Aware of the very important role that Mexico is called upon to play in Latin America, Solana says he strongly supports deepening of the privileged relations that exist between Mexico and the European Union. José Manuel Barroso also congratulates the Mexican people for having conducted these elections in such an “exemplary manner” and, regarding the intention of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (the candidate for the Party of the Democratic Revolution) to file an appeal against the results, he says: “We are also confident that all parties involved will continue to show moderation and full respect of democratic principles as has been the case during the electoral process so far”. “The European Commission remains committed to its excellent relations with Mexico”, Mr Barroso assured.
