Two infringement procedures against France are closed

Brussels, 07/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has closed two cases of legal action for infringements committed by France, which has now finally met its obligations. The first case concerns a ruling from the Court of Justice condemning France for setting wild bird hunting seasons during periods when the birds migrate to their breeding grounds and reproduce, a practice that violates the EU Birds Directive. France has reformed its law in stages, first addressing the closing dates for hunting and, more recently, the opening dates. Its latest measures in March 2006 align the opening dates for several wild bird species with the available scientific information, to the Commission's satisfaction. The second case concerns polluted drinking water in Brittany. France had been condemned by the Court of Justice in October 2004 for failing to comply with the quality norms fixed by the directive on the quality of water for human consumption, because the drinking water in Brittany was highly polluted with nitrates, thus threatening in particular the health of babies and infants. Further to various measures taken by the French authorities, the Commission is of the opinion that the drinking water in Brittany now meets the standards of the directive, and has decided that the case can be closed.
