Juncker, Schüssel and Barroso to attend Parliamentary Assembly

Brussels, 07/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which is due to open in Strasbourg on 10 April, will see the presentation of Jean-Claude Juncker's report on relations between the Europe of 46 and the European Union (EUROPE 9155), on the 11th April. The address by the Luxembourg Prime Minister, who wrote this report personally on the basis of a mandate from the Warsaw Summit, will be followed by a debate, during which the Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, whose country currently holds the six-monthly Presidency of the Council of Europe, the Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, the President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, will take the floor. The second debate on relations between the Council of Europe and the EU, the draft memorandum of understanding and plans for a fundamental rights agency of the EU will take place on Thursday, with the participation of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and of the President of the committee on foreign affairs of the European Parliament, Elmar Brok.

Among the other subjects on the agenda will be: - on Monday, an address by the new Human Rights Commissioner, Thomas Hammarberg; - on Tuesday, the situation in the Middle East, the social rehabilitation of detainees, human rights in the army; - on Wednesday, the resurgence of Nazi ideology; - on Thursday, refugees and displaced persons in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.
