GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/languages/finnish presidency

07/04/2006 (Agence Europe) - The future Finnish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers is to officially open two internet sites at the end of May, one in French and one in English, an AFP press release states, citing the justification given by the Swedish spokesperson: “As we shall not be using Finnish, or Swedish, we consider that no-one should complain”. In a recent draft recommendation, European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros called on the Council to review its language policy in order to ensure that a Presidency site is available in the German language (see EUROPE 9165).
