Giles Chichester regrets key nuclear role is not highlighted

Brussels, 09/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - The chairman of the European Parliament Energy Committee, British Conservative Giles Chichester has stated in a press release on the European Commission's Green Paper: (see other article and EUROPE 9147) “EU energy policy continues to be disproportionately over-reliant on renewable energy sources. We need them as part of the overall energy mix but let's be realistic about what can be achieved, remembering that we have yet to achieve any targets set for renewable sources”. Mr Chichester also affirmed that, “it is disappointing that the Commission fails to underline the key role of nuclear energy in ensuring security of supply and combating climate change”. Mr Chichester stated that, “Liberalisation and open, competitive markets are essential for achieving energy efficiency”. The British MEP urged the Commission to “do more to prevent Member States distorting the markets through national champions or protectionism against takeover bids”. He concluded that, “the reassertion of the right of every Member State and energy company to choose its own energy mix is to be welcomed. We should beware of one-size-fits all solutions”. EUROPE will return to the Greens/EFA position on the Green Paper, which obviously takes a very different tone.
