Brussels, 01/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - In January 2006, the rate of inflation in the euro-zone was 2.4%, compared to 2.2% in December 2005 and 1.9% in January 2005. In the EU25, the consumer price index was 2.2%, compared to 2.1% in December and 2% in January 2005. Compared to December 2005, inflation increased in the fourteen Member States, remained stable in three and fell in seven others. In January 2006, the lowest annual rates were noted in Poland (0.9%), Sweden (1.1%), Austria (1.5%) and the Netherlands (1.8%) and the highest were in Latvia (7.6%), Estonia (47%), Spain (4.2%), Luxembourg and Slovakia (4.1%). In the euro-zone, fuel for transport had the greatest impact on the rise in the annual overall rate (+0.51 percentage point), followed by liquid fuels (+0.20) and gas (+0.17), whereas clothing (-0.19) and telecommunications (-0.16) had the strongest downward impact.
