Piebalgs and Khristenko want to launch joint energy efficiency initiative

Brussels, 01/03/2006 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Brussels on 28 February as part of the EU-Russia energy dialogue, Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and Russian Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko highlighted the progress made by the four thematic groups on investment, trade, infrastructure and energy efficiency. Questions over security of supply, cooperation on sustainable energy and the climate for investment will be examined at the level of the thematic groups with a view to producing a report at the EU-Russia Summit in Vienna in May. The Energy Commissioner and his Russian counterpart also decided to work to develop a joint initiative on energy efficiency to increase energy savings in the whole energy chain, from exploration to end consumption in the EU and Russia. Finally Mr Piebalgs and Mr Khristenko discussed the latest developments in energy production and infrastructure, and also challenges in energy security in the context of the Russian Presidency of the G8. Mr Piebalgs stressed the need for a stable and predictable climate as a pre-condition for foreign investment and once again invited Moscow to increase its efforts to ratify the Energy Charter.
