Assembly determined to exercise parliamentary control over the CFSP

Brussels, 10/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the President of the WEU Assembly Jean-Pierre Masseret said “We call him the ghost”, speaking of Javier Solana. That same day, Mr Masseret met other Assembly members, COPS Ambassadors, the Chair of the Military Committee and the Director of the European Defence Agency. He told reporters that, over the next few months, the Assembly would concentrate especially on the Caucasus and Central Asia. It also intended to develop relations with national parliaments and regularly invite the Chairs of the defence committees, including the European Parliament's. German Christian Democrat Karl Von Wofau explained that it was not he survival of the WEU that was important, but that, even when the Western European Union had ceased to exist, the parliamentary control that its Assembly exercised would remain indispensable. Jean-Pierre Masseret promised that they were going to push where it hurt. He noted that there was a difference between the mechanism is it is described and the ability to make it work and that the role of MEPs was also to detect shortcomings and dysfunctions, to ensure that Europe's defences work well.
