10/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - The Winter Olympics, which opened in Turin on 10 February, are a first major operational test for the new European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the EU Member States (Frontex), said a European Commission spokesman on Friday. Indeed, since this Friday, the Agency has been responsible for coordinating specific measures taken by a total of 17 Member States to make the EU's external borders more secure and ensure that the Games go off smoothly. The spokesman refused, however, to give the technical details of the various operations. Based in Warsaw, Frontex has been operational since 1st May 2005.
