Brussels, 10/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 14 February, EU Ambassadors, in the EU Political and Security Committee (Cops), will have initial discussions on the report from EU experts who went to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to New York to assess UN needs in the DRC. Discussions were originally scheduled for 10 February but had to be delayed for a few days to allow the final touches to be put to the report and its recommendations on the possible deployment of an EU mission and any other support for OUNC, the United Nations' mission to the country. The EU military committee is then due to give its opinion on the military side before Cops looks at the dossier once again, maybe on 17 February. The political decision to send an EU mission to the DRC could be taken at the end of February. The United Nations requested that the EU make available a deterrent and prevention force to ensure the smooth running of Presidential and legislative elections in the month of June. This force would comprise some units in the field and a reserve force, and would stand ready for some months.
