Parliament supports idea of Olympic Truce during Games in Turin in 2006

Brussels, 06/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Last Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the Olympic Truce of Torino 2006, in which it calls on European institutions to do everything they can to promote peace through sport during and after the Games that are to be held in Turin from 10 to 26 February 2006. The UN Assembly General had already taken such a resolution. The tradition of a truce, brought to the fore by the International Olympic Committee, which has created an International Foundation and an International Olympic Truce Centre, dates back to the Greek Olympic Games of Antiquity and was observed during more than twelve centuries. It involved cessation of hostilities during the period of the Games and brought a message of peace. The two entities created by the IOC have been established to allow dialogue in favour of conflict resolution and in order to insist on the role of sport in society. In its resolution, the Parliament welcomes the action of the International Olympic Truce Foundation and considers that the EU must play an active part in this action. It therefore urges the Commission to enhance the potential of sport in favour of peace keeping and development. The Parliament encourages the IOC and the Turin committee for organisation of the Games to agree to have the EU flag in full show on the identification display in town and to be flying in the places where sports installations are located and where the events unfold. “The resolution on the Olympic Truce reminds everybody, all over the world, that peace is a fundamental element of the Olympic Games”, Mercedes Bresso, President of Regione Piemonte (and former MEP) commented.
