Four Charlemagne Prize-winners to debate future of Europe

Brussels, 30/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - A special debate is being held in the Yehudi Menuhin Hall of the Paul Henri Spaak building at the European Parliament in Brussels on 1 December from 15: 00 to 17: 00 (broadcast live on Europe by Satellite in Brussels) on 1 December, organised by the European Parliament, the city of Aachen and the Charlemagne Prize Foundation. A panel of four former Charlemagne Prize-winners will discuss the future of Europe with an invited audience, namely Gro Harlem Brundtland, former Norwegian prime minister, Jacques Delors, former President of the European Commission, Gyula Horn, former Hungarian prime minister, and Gyorgy Konrad, novelist. The discussion will be chaired by Pat Cox, former President of the European Parliament and winner of the Charlemagne Prize in 2004. The current EP President, Josep Borrell, will open the event, with other participants including Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, the leaders of the European Parliament's political groups, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margot Wallstrom, former Italian prime minister Emilio Colombo and former Belgian prime minister Leo Tindemans. There are four themes for discussion: 'How much Europe do we want/need?' (introduced by Jacques Delors); 'Europe's role in the world' (introduced by Gro Harlem Brundtland); 'Enlargement'(introduced by Gyula Horn) and 'European identity' (introduced by Gyorgy Konrad).
