Brussels, 30/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission adopted a Green Paper on the future of the European Migration Network. Commissioner Franco Frattini comments: "Comparable and up-to-date data and analyses are of vital importance for the development of a common policy in terms of asylum and immigration. The EMN may prove to be a valuable tool, in that it adds to work carried out by other bodies of the European Union, such as EUROSTAT". The Green Paper can be divided into two major parts: the first includes an assessment of the current network, the second tackles questions about a future EMN. The public consultation process will begin with a conference between the leaders within the network and the National contact points; a hearing of experts will then be held in March 2006. "It is very important to get the opinion of all interested parties, in order to determine the best structure for the future", stressed Franco Frattini. These positions are to be taken into consideration by the Commission in its proposed legal framework for a future European Migration Network, which is to be adopted before the end of the year 2006.
