Luxembourg, 03/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Luxembourg on 3 October, Canada and the EU signed a treaty on the exchange of air passenger information to give airlines the legal authority to provide Canadian border officials with passenger information from EU Member States to identify travellers of concern. Canada's ambassador to the EU, Jeremy Kinsman, who signed the Agreement with the British Permanent Representative to the EU, John Grant, and the European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, said it was 'a significant step in cooperation between Canada and the EU in the fight against terrorism and protection of our citizens… This Agreement strikes the right balance between respecting fundamental rights and freedoms, notably the right to privacy, and the need to reinforce measures to prevent and combat terrorism and other serious crimes'.
