ETNO calls for flexible, joined-up radio spectrum policy

Brussels, 03/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - ETNO, the voice of European telecommunications network operators, has welcomed the European Commission's initiative to further stimulate competition and growth through a review of EU radio spectrum policy (see EUROPE 9038). ETNO says the present regulatory framework for radio spectrum management has enabled the development of pan-European quality wireless applications but technological changes and increasing convergence of services call for changes in regulations to ensure fair competition. ETNO's members are major users of the radio spectrum for the roll-out of their mobile and broadcast services and call on the Commission to take into account the important investment made in this field. 'Radio spectrum is a scarce resource so any move towards a market-driven management needs to be carefully thought through as the way the spectrum is managed directly impacts on telecommunications operators' strategies and investment and consequently on the European information society as a whole,' commented Michael Bartholomew, ETNO Director.
