EU-Russia dialogue on transport opens

Brussels, 03/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The day before the EU/Russia Summit, a protocol of agreement on establishing EU-Russia dialogue on transport was signed on 3 October in Brussels by the Russian Transport Minister, Igor Levtin, and by European Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot. Transport dialogue is based on the commitment taken to exchange information on a regular basis and it will be developed in working groups responsible for examining questions of common interest relating to all forms of transport. Five groups are foreseen for now: transport strategies and partnerships between the public and private sectors, transport safety, air transport, maritime and inland navigation, road transport and rail transport. Commissioner Barrot is pleased to note that this stage in cooperation with Russia should result in new joint actions, allowing for questions relating to air and maritime security as well as the interoperability of rail transport to be tackled. The dialogue, which comes in the discussions conducted within the framework of the EU-Russia Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, must contribute to implementation of the Roadmap on the Common European Economic Space adopted at the EU-Russia summit in Moscow in May 2005 (EUROPE 8944).
