27/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - As foreseen, the European Parliament confirmed on Tuesday in Strasbourg its rejection of the proposal by four Member States (France, United Kingdom, Ireland and Sweden) on a framework decision concerning telecommunications data retention to combat crime and terrorism in particular. On 6 June, the plenary had already rejected the proposal, which was then referred back to parliamentary committee. On 27 September, the Parliament confirmed its vote by adopting the report by German Liberal Alexander Alvaro. The vote shows that MEPs wish to have their say on the matter, Mr Alvaro comments, welcoming the Commission's rival proposal on a directive with Parliament co-decision even if, he says, the proposal is not perfect (see EUROPE 9032).
