Strasbourg, 27/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The historical decision on taken on 26 September by the IRA to destroy its weapons arsenal was immediately acknowledged by both Sinn Fein MEPs, Bairbre de Brun and Mary Lou McDonald (GUE/NGL group). In a press conference in Strasbourg on 27 September, both members of the European Parliament appealed to the government and the political parties (particularly the Unionist Party and their own party, Sinn Fein) to seize this opportunity, which " considerably increases the potential for peace in Ireland". "There are no longer any possible excuses for anybody who does not wish to commit themselves (...), the Irish and British governments have a crucial role to play, and must fully apply the Good Friday Agreement, including issues on equality, human rights, fugitives and victims", the two MEPs announced. Sinn Fein, they continue, will show the whole of Europe the scope of this decision, by calling on it to continue to support the peace process in Ireland. The visit to be made to Brussels next week by Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, is part of this awareness-raising action.
