Brussels, 27/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 27 September, Hamid Reza Assefi, the Iranian Minister for foreign affairs, declared that his country may resume the process of uranium enrichment if the West continues with its intention of applying the resolution voted on by the International Atomic Energy Energy on 24 September (EUROPE 9035). This scenario had been mentioned the day before in a press release by his Ministry, which threatened to go back on all the voluntary concessions made by Iran, particularly the application of the additional protocol to the treaty on nuclear non-proliferation. Apart from the unexpected site inspections, the protocol, which was signed in 2003 but never ratified by Teheran, provides for the enrichment programme to be put on ice. "The suspension of enrichment is one of the voluntary concessions we will be overturning", Mr Assefi told the press on Tuesday, but he added: "we intend to wait a few days to see what the parties will do". The resolution of the IAEA, which opens the road for the matter to be brought before the UN Security Council, seems to have had little effect on the Iranian leaders. "We see no reason why our dossier should be sent before the Security Council. But if the Westerners want to do this by force, let them do it. We will then see who suffers the most", Mr Assefi warned. He went on to say that Teheran would re-examine its economic relations with all countries which voted for the resolution.
