Three candidates in contention before Conference of Presidents return their verdict

Strasbourg, 27/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The committee on foreign affairs of the European Parliament, which is chaired by the German Christian Democrat Elmar Brok, selected three candidates on Monday evening for the Sakharov Prize 2005: - the Nigerian lawyer Hauwa Ibrahim, who was proposed by the Socialist group; -the "Women in White", a group of women active in the defence of the rights of political prisoners in Cuba, proposed by the Spanish members of the EPP-ED group; - the organisation Reporters Without Borders, proposed by the ALDE. The prize winner will be chosen by the Conference of the Presidents of the Political Groups in the next few days, with each president awarding all of the votes of his or her group to their favourite.
