EU plans to include Tamil Tigers on list of terrorist organisations

Brussels, 27/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - “The EU Union has agreed that with immediate effect, delegations from the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) will no longer be received in any of the EU Member states until further notice”, stated a press release which was published on Tuesday by the British Embassy in Colombo. The UK presidency notes the incessant recourse to "violence and terrorism" by the Tamil Tigers and considers that "the pursuit of political goals by such totally unacceptable methods only serves to damage the LTTE's standing and credibility as a negotiating partner and gravely endangers the Peace Process so much desired by the people of Sri Lanka”. The EU now "seriously" plans to include the LTTE, which hopes to create independent State in the north east of the island, on its list of terrorist organisations. The Sri Lankan authorities hold the organisation responsible for the assassination of the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar in August, although the rebels deny all responsibility for this act.
