Brussels, 22/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a declaration published on 19 September the British presidency noted with satisfaction the joint declaration of participants in the six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear question (North and South Korea, USA, Russia, China and Japan). The 25 stated that they “note in particular the renewal of the DPRK's commitment to abandon nuclear weapons and all existing nuclear programmes and its undertaking to return to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. We look forward to early implementation of those commitments and the establishment of effective verification arrangements. The EU has supported the Six Party Talks throughout and remains ready to assist in whatever way we can. The EU welcomes the co-operation and flexibility shown by the participants and in particular appreciates the efforts of China in hosting the talks”. However, on Tuesday, North Korea affirmed that it would renounce nuclear weapons only if it received light water reactors.
